I remain on the hunt for a sweater dress. I tried this one on last week and while I technically liked it, I didn’t love it.
Maybe I need to change my mental view of myself in a sweater dress. Are they always this clingy and form fitting? So many of the ones I find are, but they don’t look that way in pins and catalogs. Yet I know that neither of those are traditionally reliable views of how something looks on somebody.
So: thoughts? Not my style? Just not my dress? Would look better with minimizing foundational garments up top? I’m crazy and it looks fine? Add a belt and it’s fine?
(Sorry for radio silence this week – I’ve been feeling quite lousy trying to recover from two nights of bad insomnia plus hormones and allergies tearing at me – basically, all I do is sleep.)
Finding a sweater dress that fits is a process. They are designed to be form fitting but are also designed for different shapes. I generally went a size up from my normal size, and you might try that.

That’s a really good idea – I will keep that in mind as I shop. Thank you!

Yep – go up a size. I’m too curvy for sweater dresses (or jersey material or the iconic DVF wrap-style dresses) despite being in shape (well in-shape enough for me). But everytime I consider one of those type dresses – I always go up a size & the fit is better. But then I return the dress without ever wearing it. Such is the vicious cycle!

Okay, good to know!! But ha – I am afraid that if I do find one I feel okay in, the same vicious cycle will happen. We’ll see!

i wonder if a tunic length would flatter your body, a little shorter than this, but still with leggings? I like the idea, I think it fits your librarian aesthetic, and I think there are a lot of them out there right now in different styles of necklines that could be great on you. I like what the other girls said about going up a size. Just make sure the shoulders still fit well! 🙂
I’ve been reading the knitting book Fit to Flatter and for me, i apparently should be wearing shorter length than I have been. (i’m between bottom heavy and proportional, I think) I have been so likely to cover my tummy + butt that it seemed like more length===better. 😀 I have yarn for this sweater dress/tunic http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/idlewood and i’m now wondering if that length won’t suit me as well as when i bought the yarn. yikes, didn’t mean to hijack your thread with my woes, LOL!

Hmm, that’s a good idea – I will keep that in mind as I search, too!
It’s hard to get out of the “hiding” mindset and actually really get a sense of what proportions are best, isn’t it? Clinton Kelly is always talking about that on What Not to Wear. I think that’s a super pretty tunic, but I think you’re right, the length might not be best. Can you play with the length and modify it it a little? And it’s never a hijack! It’s a conversation and I love it. 🙂

good good 🙂 and you are right, I can totally modify this. my instinct after reading fit to flatter is to go shorter with it, but I actually did get an extra skein of yarn, maybe I just need to go LONGER instead!

You are young and svelte. Your “figure” – this time of your life – is a TEN (on a scale of one to then). As to showing it off. You will make men’s eyes happy. But who “looks after you?” Ha ha. Your boyfriend might be a bit protective. (smiles). Yeah, I would love the belt.
